This is my 5th visit to Japan. It is also one that I had the most number of days there; and making the most number of moves around the country on its public transport. Appreciate Chai Noi for initiating the trip and making the transport arrangements such as the Flight and JR Ticket, and being the accommodating room mate. Thanks to Teck Siew for her thoughtful and thorough planning and travelling tips that allowed me to venture into new places without the need to do much pre-trip planning. Grateful to Juejing, for his patience and for being a very reliable human GPS (at times, even better than GoogleMap)! Of course, a big thank you to the great company of the Wong and Koh families, too :)

(D3/D4/D6) Kanazawa 金沢

Days 3, 4 & 6: 5, 6 & 8 December 2016

Kanazawa Tourist Information Guide

Kanazawa Station

The Tsuzumi ("drum") Gate at JR Kanazawa Station East entrance

The train station was dubbed as one of the world's most beautiful train stations
(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/rail-journeys/The-worlds-most-spectacular-railway-stations/stations-kanazawa/)

An interesting observation:
The middle section was created for the pedestrians to pull their trolleys, bicycles, etc. up or down. A very thoughtful design, isn't it? It is not surprising that this was created due to the need as bicycles are a common sight in this city. On another note, we don't find this design in the Tokyo stations.

Inside this train station is a big shopping mall (which is part of the cluster of malls near the train station). In one the malls, we can find the "Dining Resort" where the entire level is filed with restaurants.

Kanazawa seemed to be the prefecture that promotes the use of GOLD in everyday life. Not just cosmetics, but also for consumption!

Kenrokuen Garden (兼六園) & Kanazawa Castle Park (金沢城)

The garden is ready to welcome winter... where structures are set up to create a frame, not only to protect the branches from the falling snow, but also to hold the snow to create beautiful cones when it starts to snow more heavily.

Crystal clear water creates a perfect reflection.

The bridge leading to the castle.

It looked as if that the castle was already coated with a layer of snow.
Not really. Do not be deceived by its white colour roof.

Similar to many other castles, there is always a 'grand entrance' (which was the guard house) before entering the actual castle.

Without fail, the main castle building is always surrounded by a moot.

Something unique that I had not noticed in other castles - the cross section of the pillars are not the usual "square". It's a rhombus (aka diamond).

Like many ancient structures, not a single nail was used when building the castle.
Pieces of woods were used to hold the beams and pieces of timber together.
This reminds me of the S1 Alternative Assessment on "bridge building"  this year!

Myoryuji Temple (妙立寺), also known as Ninjadera (Ninja Temple)

The name of the temple suggested something mysterious! Images of ninjas executing their acts in this building that is full of the traps appeared in our imagination!

In actual fact, this is a very well thought-through building that incorporates many principles of sciences in its construction! While the entire explanation was done in Japanese, we were given a reference booklet that translate the descriptions in English so that we can better appreciate the design and purpose of the construction. All in all, at the end of the booklet, it clarifies - the temple has nothing to do with ninjas!

This is the entrance to the temple where all visitors have to remove their shoes and deposit their bags so that they could move from one 'station' to another easily.

Nishi Chaya District (西茶屋街)

Higashi Chaya District (at eastern chaya district)

    Omicho Market (近江町市場)

    • LINK
    • Biggest fresh food market in Kanazawa

These are readily cooked seafood, mostly sold in sticks

The highlight of a fresh seafood market would be the buy-and-eat seafood!

The price of the fresh oyster is proportional to the size!

Sea urchin (uni) that you can scoop and eat!
Fresh prawn that is ready to melt in your mouth!

These are ready to follow you to your home kitchen!

Look! There's a difference between  冷冻 (frozen) and 冷藏 (refrigeration)
    (translated with Google Translator)
     1、冷冻温度低,可达到零下18摄氏度。 2、冷藏一般保持在1-10摄氏度。

Want to consider a seafood hamper?

    21st Century Museum
A huge wall paper that extends itself to the chairs placed in this spacious room.

One of the more interesting installation in the museum. The science behind this is, the room (underneath) has a glass roof such that people inside the room could not see through but those outside can see what's going on inside the room (similar to those used in the interrogation room). In addition, the roof is covered by a layer of water to create that additional layer of motion created by the waves.
